Change in Roofing Trends

Over the past few years, there is a dramatic increase in the roofing technology and the roofing materials. Starting from the traditional asphalt based designs we are now moving towards the metal roofs and fiber roofs. Every material has its own significance and pros and cons. There is no doubt in the fact that quality roofing increases the value of your house and makes it attractive. Not only the materials are increasing, the architectural designs of the roofs are also increasing day by day.

Our discussion in the following lines will primarily focus on the roofing techniques that are environmental friendly, both inside and outside the house or building, and energy efficient. Over the past few years, people have started to use such roofing techniques and materials that are energy efficient. Two of such trends are Green Roofs and Cool Roofs.

You may have seen around you the houses that have plantation on their roofs. This is a green roof. It has a layer of plantation over a layer of insulating, waterproof material. Probably the best insulating material is the liquid rubber coating that is adhesive, elastic and seamless. Also it is long lasting and durable. Green roofs provide several benefits to the environment as well as the underlying building. They absorb rain water and provide insulation to the underlying roof layer. They help to lower the internal temperature of the building and protect the inhabitants from urban heat. They also protect the house and underlying layers from the UV rays. Moreover they provide habitat for the wildlife that may live on small plants. So they are very environmental friendly. A green roof increases the life of the original roofing material which can be shingles, slate or any else. So it is both cost and energy effective and environment friendly. Due to the above mentioned qualities, most of the people are now moving towards having a green roof. Setting up a green roof may involve higher initial costs, but the gain is higher in the long run.

As a matter of fact, a green roof may be suitable for a house, but for an office building, having a green roof may seem unprofessional and awkward. The problem to the solution is a cool roof which looks stylish and elegant, yet it is energy efficient. A cool roof is made of such a material that has the ability to reflect solar rays including UV and infrared rays. Moreover they have the ability to radiate the non-reflected or absorbed rays efficiently. The cool roofing materials are geo-engineered to incorporate such characteristics in them. The famous materials that are available to build to build cool roofs are metals, and concrete tiles. Most people associate the white color the cool roof, but it can come in any light color. A cool roof may reduce the annual air conditioning bill of a building by 10-15%. Moreover the life of such a roof is significantly greater than other types. But there are certain concerns associated with the cool roofs. The biggest of them is that as they keep the internal temperature of the building low, due to high reflectance, they increase the environment or global temperature.

Due to the facts stated above, green and cool roofs are getting highly popular now a days as they provide energy efficiency and cost effectiveness.
